Integration cost-effectiveness of the prevention fires in the planning and forest management
The Life+ DEMORGEST project aims to reduce the vulnerability of the forests of Catalonia to large forest fires (GIFs), facilitating the adoption of new models of multifuncional forest management (ORGEST models) that include the production of various goods and services to promote the prevention of GIFs; and which raise awareness in the general public of the role of forest management in firefighting and the conservation of agricultural landscapes. The project is coordinated by the Forest Ownership Centre (Centre de la Propietat Forestal, CPF) and the pilot areas are located in Catalonia.
The networking activities between Life MEDACC and Life+ DEMORGEST projects have resulted in the common implementation of two experimental actions in order to complement different project approaches in the same pilot areas.
- In the case of Life+ DEMORGEST, the objective of the pilot experiment is to apply a multifuncional forest management (ORGEST models) to promote the prevention of GIFs
- In the case of Life MEDACC, the objective of the pilot experiment is to demonstrate and quantify the impacts of management which makes forests less vulnerable to climate change. In the case of the Segre watershed, management practices pursue to reduce the fire risk and to potentiate trees growth through the reduction of tree competitiveness.
The management practices were designed together with the Forest Ownership Centre (CPF), the Forest Sciences Centre of Catalonia (Centre Tecnològic Forestal de Catalunya, CTFC) and CREAF according to the adaptive management guidelines compiled in ORGEST (CPF, 2009).
